Through the Past Darkly:
Charlie Hunter's Encaustic Technique
Online demo with Q&A, 1-4 pm. $75.00
For the last decade, contemporary realist Charlie Hunter has explored the properties of encaustic in much of his studio work. Unlike many practitioners, Hunter uses encaustic as a layered effect atop oil or watercolor paintings or drawing; further manipulating the finish by scraping, buffing, glazing, and rubbing oil pigments into the surface.
A heated mixture of beeswax and damar resin, encaustic is a tantalizing and mysterious technique. The word “encaustic,” derived from the ancient Greek enkaustikos, means “to burn in,” and is one of the oldest, most stable painting techniques known.
Now, for the first time, Hunter is sharing these breathtaking techniques in an online painting demonstration workshop. Take a look at what encaustic can offer - then plan on joining us.
