The Painter's Path - Nine Month Online Workshop

A Juried, Nine-Month, 12-Artist Online Workshop

Painting is a challenge; following the painter’s path – even more so. During this exciting, intimate nine-month online workshop, we’ll dive deep into what makes the artist tick. We will explore techniques and tools, and discuss subject matter and differing narrative approaches. But, more than that, we will be building a community. We are looking for a dozen artists brave enough to put aside preconceptions, ready to explore and innovate, and ready to support and strengthen one another as they follow their true painter’s path.

Jason and Charlie feel strongly that keeping the group small and cohesive is of great importance in order to provide an optimal experience. We will be selecting twelve artists from the submitted applications, with a short list of alternates.

This is a juried workshop. There is no charge for applying. If accepted, tuition is $1850.00. Applications open September 1 and close September 30. Please see bottom of page for full notification and payment schedule.

OBJECTIVES

  •  Develop new techniques, tools, and approaches for creating successful paintings.
  •  Think more boldly and intuitively while discovering your true artistic voice.
  •  Gain confidence and develop new strategies for achieving your creative goals.
  •  Explore design elements and demystify principles such as atmospheric perspective and the subtle importance of shapes, edges, and value.
  •  Discuss philosophies and practicalities of art and painting in direct interaction with instructors and peers.
  •  Discuss how developing artists can best approach their practices and careers.
  • Learn how Jason and Charlie approach the discipline of painting, balanced with the day-to-day management of life as a working artist.

SESSIONS

Demonstration/Discussion
The first Wednesday of the month: 4:00 - 5:30 pm Eastern time
  • Each session will feature a demonstration and discussion, followed by a Q&A session.
  • A source image will be provided each session, from which each artist will create a work, due the Sunday prior to Group Critique.
  • For ease and consistency, Jason and Charlie will be painting on 12x16 panels during this workshop. Participating artists are strongly encouraged to do the same.

Ten-Minute One-on-One Check-In Sessions
The second Wednesday of the month: 4:00 - 5:30 pm Eastern time
  • Each participating artist will be assigned a monthly, recurring ten-minute slot to meet individually with Jason or Charlie. Artists are free to discuss any issues or questions they might have about that month’s assignment, challenges they are facing in their painting practice, or painting in general.
  • Charlie and Jason will alternate with whom they meet each month.

Group Critique
The third Wednesday of the month: 4:00 - 5:30 pm Eastern time
  • Artists will submit their completed painting by Sunday evening prior to Crit Session.
  • A supportive critique session is a valuable tool for developing one’s own voice. We gain the most when we learn from one another.
  • All artists and instructors are expected to attend, with each painting discussed for six minutes by the instructors and the work’s creator.
  • Other artists in attendance share comments in the chat.

Painters’ Forum
  • An online forum will be provided where artists can exchange ideas freely and community can be built.
  • Artists will be encouraged to post images of their works-in-progress, other projects, and pose comments, questions, and thoughts related to successes and challenges faced on the painter’s path.
  • While the forum will be unmoderated, a spirit of positivity is expected.
